Masonry Details for Thermal Efficiency

Including Updates on the New 2013 Connecticut Code - IBC 2012 & MSJC 2011

Coordinating structural and architectural masonry details for thermal efficiency can be challenging with new contemporary designs, building code requirements, budget restraints and fast-paced schedules. This presentation will feature some of the most challenging masonry details with real solutions by coordinating structural and architectural details. Some of the details covered are; Standard Shelf Angles, Projecting Shelf Angles, Special Shelf Angles, Stairwells, Masonry Veneers – no Relieving Angles, Top of Wall, Loose Lintels, Beam Details and Column Details. There will be a brief review of how increased masonry strength (f’m) can reduce wall costs and increase thermal efficiency in light of the proposed revisions to MSJC Table 2 – Compressive Strength of Masonry. This presentation will also include IBC 2012 and 2011 MSJC Masonry 530 Code updates for the new 2013 Connecticut Building Code.

Richard Filloramo is Area Director of Market Development and Technical Services for the International Masonry Institute New England Region - Connecticut / Rhode Island Office. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Architecture from Ohio State University and an Associate’s Degree in Construction Technology from Wentworth Institute of Technology. He has more than 37 years of experience in the masonry industry. He served as the national IMI liaison for building codes and standards and is a member of the Masonry Standards Joint Committee, the code writing body responsible for the Masonry 530 Code. He has served on numerous committees and has been a member of The Masonry Society, American Institute of Architects, US Green Building Council, CEFPI, National Concrete Masonry Association, Brick Institute of America, Construction Specification Institute, Building Safety Seismic Committee of NEHRP, American Society of Civil Engineers, American Concrete Institute, ASTM, ICC, USGBC, CTGBC and several other national and regional organizations. He has written many technical papers, spearheaded efforts to educate the industry on new masonry codes and design requirements for masonry construction, and lectured across the country. Mr. Filloramo has been involved with the design, construction and inspection of more than 5,000 building projects.
